This Labor Day weekend was especially deadly on California’s state roads and freeways.
California Highway Patrol officers investigated 43 fatalities from Friday night through Monday night, 28 more than last year’s holiday weekend, a CHP spokesperson told KTLA 5 News.
Five of those deaths occurred in Los Angeles County, including a multi-car pileup on the 91 Freeway in Cerritos on Sunday that claimed two lives.
Full statewide fatality data, including local law enforcement agencies, was not immediately available.
DUI arrests were also slightly up this Labor Day weekend, 1,140 versus 1,064 in 2023, CHP said.
Highway Patrol officers issued nearly 28,000 citations, including 16,000 for excessive speed, 851 for seatbelt violations, and 1,731 for distracted driving. Nearly 500 drivers were cited for traveling 100 mph or more.
“Everyone’s safety is our top priority, so make responsible choices. Drive sober, stay focused and help keep our roads safe for all who use them,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee in a statement ahead of the holiday weekend. “Your decisions behind the wheel can save lives – yours and others.”
The traffic fatality rate in California varies by year but generally falls between 9 and 10 deaths per 100,000 people, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In recent years, the state has averaged around 3,500 to 4,000 road deaths annually.
