LOWELL, Ind. – A man arrested for stabbing a teenage girl in Northwest Indiana Saturday during a baseball game has been charged with attempted murder.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department said 26-year-old Dimas Gabriel Yanes has been charged with the following:

  • Attempted Murder – Level 1 felony
  • Aggravated Battery Posing Substantial Risk of Death – Level 3 felony
  • Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury to Person Under 14 – Level 3 felony
  • Battery by Means of Deadly Weapon – Level 5 felony
  • Intimidation – Level 5 felony

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies said the stabbing happened at around 3:45 p.m. Saturday at the VFW baseball field near West 173rd Street and Morse Street in unincorporated Lowell, while the 13-year-old girl was watching her brother’s baseball game with her mother.

According to investigators, while watching the game, a person now identified as Yanes attacked the teen girl and stabbed her in the hand. When the teen’s mother tried to intervene, Yanes tried to stab her as well.

Yanes was arrested Sunday afternoon after an extensive manhunt. He was spotted in the southern portion of Lake County and was arrested after being chased through a cornfield in the area near 120th and Iowa.

Authorities believe Yanes was in the process of cutting his hair to change his appearance shortly before his arrest.

A “butcher-style knife” believed to have been used in the attack was also recovered.

The teen girl was later treated at the hospital and released.

According to investigators, Yanes had been deported to Honduras in 2018 but allegedly returned to the U.S. illegally. Investigators believe he may have been involved in criminal activity across the U.S. since his return.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has also been notified about Yanes’ arrest.
