AUSTIN (KXAN) — The city of Austin Heritage Tourism Division will open an application period for its “Heritage Preservation” grants on Sept. 10, with a total of $3 million available for recipients.
Nonprofits, companies and government agencies “must demonstrate two years of operating” in the city, and must also submit examples of marketing their location as historic. Residential property owners, and entities already receiving funding from a different hotel occupancy tax-funded program, are not allowed to receive one of the grants.
“Preserving our city’s historic sites isn’t just about honoring the past; it’s about shaping the future,” said Sylnovia Holt-Rabb, Austin Economic Development Department director, in a press release. “Through the Heritage Preservation Grant, we’re investing in the cultural landmarks that make Austin unique, ensuring they continue to inspire both residents and visitors for generations to come.”
A scoring rubric will be applied to judge applications, with a third of points coming from an application’s “preservation impact.” That category looks at the significance of the site and the applicant’s plan for the funds.
The grants also include a submission category for specific projects that promote tourism and preserve sites with historic designations.
Previous grantees include the Paramount Theater, Bethany Cemetery, local dancehall Broken Spoke, and the Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms Foundation.
Applications can be submitted to the city until close of business on Oct. 8.
