ATWATER, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A special education teacher in an Atwater high school has been arrested and accused of engaging in “inappropriate conduct” with students, the Merced Union High School District announced.

Officials with the district said Julio Barcelo, a special education teacher at Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, has been arrested by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 30.

The district says that, as soon as they became aware of reports that Barcelo had engaged in inappropriate conduct with high school students during past school years, he was immediately placed on administrative leave and the district has commenced its own investigation into the allegations.

As of Friday night, officials with Merced Union say they are limited in what details they can disclose due to student and employee privacy.
