While defending his family from an invader, a homeowner stabbed a man suspected of breaking into multiple homes in a San Fernando Valley neighborhood early Friday morning, police said.

The situation occurred around 4:12 a.m. on Elkwood Street in Winnetka, police said. The suspect, described as a man in his mid-20s, entered a home while the residents were still inside.

The man was immediately confronted by the adult daughter of the homeowner. The homeowner then followed the man closely, and a physical confrontation ensued, police said.

The homeowner stabbed the man during the confrontation in an effort to protect his family, according to authorities. The man was injured but managed to flee the scene.

He was spotted by officers with the Los Angeles Police Department and was arrested. He was treated for his injuries in a local hospital and was listed in stable condition.

No one inside the home, including the homeowner and his daughter, was injured. No items were reported stolen.

KTLA’s Omar Lewis spoke to a neighbor who said that the man first broke into her home before moving on to the next one.

“What I heard was a big bang,” the woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, said. “I called my husband to check the [security] camera and he said someone was in the backyard.”

No additional details were immediately made available.
