Travelers with gluten sensitivities are in good hands in New England, as some of the best gluten-free restaurants and bakeries in the nation are found here, according to USA Today readers.

Three Wishes Bakery in Johnston, R.I. ranked No. 4 and Twist Bakery & Cafe in Burlington and Millis, Mass. ranked No. 9 on the publication’s list of 10 best gluten-free bakeries in America. What’s more, Pane e Vino ranked No. 3 and The Malted Barley ranked No. 6 on its list of 10 best restaurants for gluten-free dining in America, and both are in Providence, R.I. The lists, released Wednesday, are part of the publication’s 2024 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

“For individuals with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or those who simply choose to avoid gluten for health reasons, dedicated gluten-free restaurants or eateries with gluten-free menus can be gateways to a world of flavors that caters to their health needs,” wrote USA Today.

The restaurants on the list “take great care to prevent cross-contamination” and “showcase innovative and diverse menus,” noted the publication.

About Providence’s Pane e Vino, USA Today wrote, “There are nearly as many options on their gluten-free menu as the regular menu, including hard-to-find gluten-free dishes such as ravioli, chicken parmigiano, and gnocchi.”

Meanwhile, The Malted Barley offers a range of gluten-free sandwiches and soft pretzels, wrote the publication.

Three Wishes Bakery is known for its gluten-free cakes and also serves up glazed doughnuts, churros, and chocolate chip cookies, wrote USA Today.

Over at Twist Bakery & Cafe, the menu changes with the seasons.

“Twist Bakery & Cafe goes beyond gluten-free sweets —like their beloved lemon squares, cakes, and brownies — and offers savory items such as sandwiches and quesadillas,” wrote USA Today.

The No. 1 restaurant for gluten-free dining in America is Razzi’s Pizzeria in Seattle, and the No. 1 gluten-free bakery is Mariposa Baking Company in Oakland and San Francisco, Calif., according to USA Today.

For the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards lists, USA Today travel experts select 20 nominees in topics from food to lodging, destinations to things to do. Then the publication asks readers to cast votes to determine the top 10.
