Readers sound off on Hamas, the Cyclone mishap and building new housing

If Palestinians reject Hamas, peace is possible

Pleasantville, N.Y.: Although I do give my condolences for all the deaths that are going on in Gaza for the Palestinians, it doesn’t excuse the fact that Hamas killed and kidnapped Israeli civilians that started this all. For whatever Palestinian civilian deaths Voicer Jagjit Singh mentions, I can say the same on the Israeli side. For some reason, he tends to ignore the Israeli civilians who have been killed either by suicide bombings, random stabbings or even rocket attacks, and I find that appalling, being a native of Israel.

Also, I can never understand why Israel is most likely the only country in the world that gets condemned for trying to stop the very terrorists who are trying to kill them when that’s hardly the case for other countries.

More importantly, the real reason there are more deaths on the Palestinian side is mainly because Hamas, led by Yahya Sinwar (photo), literally places their own people into harm’s way and couldn’t care less about them getting caught in the crossfire. Had they just accepted the original UN partition plan back in 1947 rather than choose to be against the existence of a Jewish state, they wouldn’t be having these problems today.

If the Palestinian people really want to see this conflict end, then they should start calling out Hamas and put an end to this Nakba against Israel or they can forever live in a state of war with them for the rest of their lives, with the choice being theirs to decide. Tal Barzilai

Always dodging

Lakewood, N.J.: First it was the Vietnam War. The orange chicken faked bone spurs to avoid military service. A doctor provided him with a letter. It’s interesting to note that the doctor’s landlord was allegedly Chump’s father. Now he’s playing on and off games if he’ll dodge a debate with a woman who’s far superior in intelligence, values and morals. I wonder if he’ll get another deferment for bone spurs, this time for the ones in his pumpkin head. Frank Mongiello

Consequential ruling

Brooklyn: The Supreme Court said Donald Trump can’t be prosecuted for trying to get the Justice Department to lie about elections to state officials about false elections because interactions within the administration are immune from prosecution! If Kamala Harris is elected, she should tell the Justice Department to fake criminal charges against Justice Samuel Alito so he can be jailed and removed. Let him be the first to feel what a ruthless president — the type he seems to want — can do. I only hope someone, somehow, restores sanity to the court before it loses all legitimacy. Martin Selbst

Ideological confusion

Bedford, N.Y.: Every time I read comments from readers such as Voicer Brenda Hodgkiss, I have to stop from laughing out loud if I’m in public. Hodgkiss claims Kamala Harris has “Marxist leanings and wants to ‘socialize’ ” the U.S. Do Trump devotees not realize it’s him who has expressed admiration, respect and even “love” for leaders like Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un, who are Communist (i.e. Marxist) leaders? It seems that MAGA cultists are happy to simply regurgitate the nonsense being spewed by their leader. Truly pathetic! Céline Secada

American fascism

Brick, N.J.: There was once a strong and reliable voice of good conscience in the Republican Party! That voice belonged to Sen. John McCain. Nowadays, whenever this or that Republican senator or representative might dare to speak out against the direction of his party, it’s in a whisper at most! And it quickly fades away. There is simply no Republican member of Congress with enough character and guts to condemn in no uncertain terms the party leader, Donald Trump! They have sold their souls to him! Remember it was the silence and do-nothing mindset of the German people that enabled the rise of Adolf Hitler! America is on a parallel path to a similar form of fascism, or even American Nazism! The enthralled followers of Trump resemble the followers of Hitler about a century ago! When people like this look into the mirror, what do they see? Nicholas S. Molinari

Animal urges

Merion Station, Pa.: Recently, environmentalist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. admitted that 10 years ago, he removed a dead bear cub from the side of a road and placed it in Central Park. Kick Kennedy claimed that 30 years ago, her father used a chainsaw to decapitate a beached whale. Kennedy’s fetish for deceased/diseased mammals shows no signs of abating, as he’s now entangled himself with a raging bull. Paul L. Newman

Start with self

Howard Beach: With what’s going on in the world in general, and here in particular, reactivity, ignorance and violence — verbal and physical — rule the day. When we act or react blindly, on autopilot, we put everyone in danger. Awareness has to start somewhere, one person at a time. It begins here with me. Just a simple reminder between activities: Am I aware or on autopilot? Choose to be aware; see the difference. Ernest Kienzle

Spend wisely

Brooklyn: Re “Zombie mortgages & profligacy’s price” (Aug. 28): My father’s lesson was, “If you can’t pay for it when the bill comes in, you have no business buying it.” I agree. Josie Oliveri

Bad example

North Massapequa, L.I.: Re ” ‘Can’t relate to it,’ ” (Aug. 25): A-Roid was invited back for Old Timers’ Day — a day to remember and honor past players who played hard and fair and respected the game. Alex Rodriguez was a good player until that was not good enough for him. He had to take performance-enhancing drugs instead of working harder to hone his craft — he cheated. He threatened to sue the Yankees at one point and made disparaging remarks about Derek Jeter, who has never had a bad word said about him. Why would the Yankees ever invite A-Rod back? He is not a role model for youngsters. It only shows them that cheating is okay and there are no consequences, and that is a lot of the problem with our society today. No one is accountable for their actions. Therese D. Shirreffs

Coulda been bad

Brooklyn: Unfortunately, I was not in Coney Island the day the Cyclone malfunctioned, causing numerous riders to walk down to the street. I was informed by many of my friends who work by the structure that no one called the Fire Department. This was very odd, since there is a firehouse about 150 yards from the Cyclone and another just blocks away on Neptune Ave. Thank goodness no one was hurt. God willing and if the seas don’t rise, see you next year. Louie Scarcella

Page discrepancy

Staten Island: I have written previously about the changes to the Daily News printed edition with the assumption that its ultimate goal was to eliminate paper altogether. I agree with the complaints from recent Voicers that the prices just keep going up. I guess that is one way to achieve that goal. But what was really odd to me is that Tuesday’s paper online was different than the printed paper. Pages 16 and 17 had completely different stories. How does that happen? Gina Ottrando

Death trap

Bayside: Please ignore Voicer David Gonzalez’s suggestion to leave your dog in your car when you go into a place of business. The inside of a parked car can get too hot for dogs, and dogs can even die from this heat. So, please don’t leave your dog in the car. Joan Bratkowsky

Open land

Briarwood: Mayor Adams spoke Tuesday at a press conference regarding making “smart choices” concerning affordable housing. Last week, when I was on Governors Island, a friend remarked that all the abandoned government buildings could be renovated for affordable housing. There’s no lack of space there to also build new housing. There is transportation to Lower Manhattan via a five-minute ferry ride. Just look around, Mr. Mayor. All over the city, there are plenty of abandoned lots that could also be used to build new housing. Just open your eyes! Patricia Nuzzi
