An 8-year-old child was found dead in a car being driven by a suspect connected to an overnight killing, who was himself shot dead by police as he drove from New Hampshire to Maine.

“The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain under active investigation,” according to New Hampshire’s Attorney General.

The unidentified suspect was reportedly gunned down by cops on the busy Piscataqua River Bridge as he attempted to cross state lines. That man is believed to have killed a woman in Troy, N.H., before fleeing overnight.

“Early this morning police engaged with the adult male on the bridge in an incident that ended with the male being fatally shot,” prosecutors said Thursday.

The dead child’s connection to the suspect and the victim is unclear. Authorities said the adult female victim was found in a New Hampshire home 100 miles from the bridge.

The Maine Department of Transportation says as many as 80,000 vehicles cross the Piscataqua River Bridge daily. The overpass connects Portsmouth, N.H. to Kittery, Maine.

The busy bridge was shut down entirely around 3 a.m., according to a local CBS News report. It didn’t reopen until the morning rush hour was complete. Authorities said there is no threat to the public connected with the incident.
