Beaufort County officials believe the body to be Stanley Kotowski, who first went missing Aug. 16.

A missing man from Massachusetts was found dead on Monday in South Carolina, authorities say.

Stanley Kotowski was on vacation in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, when he was last seen on Aug. 16, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said.

Around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Beaufort authorities responded to reports of suspicious activity at a home in Hilton Head Island, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. After investigating, officers found a dead body underneath a nearby home, the statement said.

Officials say they believe the body to be Kotowski’s. He was 60 years old.

An autopsy on Tuesday will confirm the identity of the body and determine how the victim died, the sheriff’s office said.

Kotowski’s family of Methuen told Boston 25 News he walked out of their rental and disappeared. He had been dealing with anxiety, they said, although it was unclear if that was related to his disappearance.
