Katz's restaurant owners buy space in downtown Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — After shuttering in 2010, Katz’s Deli could make a comeback of sorts in Austin.

Barry and Lisa Katz, owners of the Katz’s restaurant company, bought the property at 618 W. 6th St. in an auction, a company representative said.

Katz’s Deli and Bar closed in 2010 after three decades in business. Austin Business Journal reported that the business filed for bankruptcy after about $27,500 in unpaid taxes. The restaurant previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2004.

Below is past KXAN coverage from the Katz’s Deli closure in 2010.

The West Sixth Street restaurant served New York-style deli classics and Jewish kosher-style food, the ABJ reported.

The Katz family owns four Katz’s restaurants in the Houston area.

The acquisition is expected to close in August, and more details will be shared then, a release said. The Katzes plan to lease the second and third floors of the building.
