Police officers shot and killed a man who was carrying a gun outside a NYCHA complex in East Harlem early Sunday, according to NYPD officials.

NYPD Chief of Housing Martine Materasso said the department received several calls about a man brandishing a gun outside the Washington Houses near East 103rd Street and Third Avenue at around 12:30 a.m. When officers arrived, Materasso said the man refused to drop his weapon

“The officers gave numerous commands verbally to drop the gun, which the male did not comply,” said NYPD Chief of Housing Martine Materasso at a news conference outside the NYCHA complex early Sunday morning. “The two officers discharged their firearms, striking the male.”

Police officials did not identify the man, but said he was 62 years old. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

NYPD officials said a gun was retrieved on the scene Saturday, and an investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

The incident brings the number of people shot and killed by NYPD officers so far this year to at least 10, according to data compiled by Gothamist.

In May, police officers shot and killed a 33-year-old man in East Flatbush after they said he was spotted pointing a gun at another man. That same month, officers shot and killed a 26-year-old man in mental distress who NYPD officials said lunged at officers with a pair of knives after he was tasered by the police.
