AUSTIN (KXAN) — Traffic is back around the University of Texas at Austin campus, especially on Saturday as thousands of students moved back into apartments in the West Campus neighborhood.
The West Campus residents came in addition to the more than 8,000 who are moving in on campus.
“I have three daughters, and this is actually the easiest move so far,” one man told KXAN.
He was one of the lucky ones. Parking was at a premium on some very packed roads like 23rd Street.
“You just gotta get lucky,” he said. “We have two cars here. The other one is only a block away. It’s fantastic.”
Police were out helping direct traffic, all while parents had to dodge cars to help get their kids unpacked and ready for the start of a new school year.
Apartments like The Mark and The Standard had a constant flow of people, and things, moving through their doors.
‘It was very hot’
“It was very hot as we moved in,” one student said. “It was around 100 degrees. [There was] a lot of sweating — and my place came unfurnished, so it took awhile to bring everything in, but I’m glad that it’s done.”
Mother Nature wasn’t letting up, with the heat making things a little more complicated for some moving — especially for the parents left standing outside watching and waiting for their cue to move.
If you’re thinking about procrastinating, those already moved in said time is not on your side.
“It’s kind of too late for them,” one student said jokingly. “It’s going to be too crowded.”
If Saturday was any indication, she might be right.
Record-breaking applications for fall 2024
University officials said UT received a record-breaking 73,000 applications for undergraduate admissions for fall 2024. Officials said that was a 20% increase from previous years.
