Man arrested for deadly Austin shooting

CHICAGO – A man was arrested and charged in connection with a deadly shooting in Austin.

Chicago police said the shooting happened just after 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, near the 100 block of South Lavergne Avenue.

The suspect reportedly approached a man in his 30s and fired multiple shots, hitting him in the neck and back. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

Police said detectives later identified the suspect as 40-year-old Jonathan Atkinson, who was arrested Thursday, Aug. 22 in the 4900 block of West Fulton Street.

Atkinson has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting.
