Marshfield police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a Level 3 sex offender who allegedly approached a teenage girl while she was jogging on Tuesday.

At about 5:45 p.m., police received a call about a suspicious man driving in the Humarock area of town, according to a statement from the Marshfield Police Department.

The man, later identified as Edmund David Chance Jr., offered the girl a ride in his car and then followed her after she declined until she ran away, the statement said.

After locating Chance in his vehicle after the incident, Marshfield police later determined that he did not register when moving, which is required by law for Level 3 sex offenders, according to police. Scituate police have a warrant out for his arrest for this violation.

Chance was convicted of rape in 1991 and again in 2001, according to the state’s Sex Offender Registry.

Authorities say he was last seen driving a black Lincoln Zephyr, with Massachusetts license plate 4NWY15. He had been living at 23 Hawthorne St. on the Scituate side of Humarock.

Police ask if Chance or his vehicle is seen, to contact authorities immediately.

“We also wish to thank the brave young woman who contacted us to report this,” the department wrote.
