Giants Assistant GM Shuts Down Signing QB Amid Daniel Jones’ Struggles

The New York Giants have been under the microscope this offseason, not because of their offseason moves, but because the team was dissected in the ever-popular “Hard Knocks” series.

Fans got to see the Giants in a new light, including the moves made by general manager Joe Schoen. Schoen made it clear in the episodes of the series that the team would stick with Daniel Jones, but he also tried to trade up for a top-three pick to select a quarterback. However, in the end, the Giants chose to draft LSU’s Malik Nabers instead of a quarterback prospect at No. 6 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Jones has had up-and-down success with the Giants, and he has also dealt with multiple injuries, the most recent being a torn ACL which Jones suffered in Week 9 of the 2023 season.

Jones has since worked his way back from the season-ending injury and finally made his debut during preseason Week 2. With Jones back in the fold, the veteran quarterback looked incredibly rough, throwing multiple interceptions that made everyone far less confident about his skillset heading into 2024.

The struggles that Jones showcased led to much doubt and the possibility that the team would seek a new quarterback. However, Giants assistant GM Brandon Brown shot down this idea completely.

“When you look at that, I would say no,” Brown told the New York Daily News. “Why would we be in the quarterback market right now? With D.J. [nine] months off his ACL injury and having his feet wet for the first time against Houston, it’s all a part of the progression process. And it’s him getting used to his weapons and us being able to protect him. I think what the O-line has shown in the preseason right now, there’s continued continuity. We all think that there’s going to be an evolution process here where we can continue to build continuity and D.J. gets comfortable as we get more reps.”

The current quarterback room for the Giants is Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito.

Lock has played for the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, and is now backing up Jones in New York. DeVito took over for Jones in 2023, and immediately took the world by storm. Though he became a media darling, he finished nine games with 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions.

DeVito’s stats were respectable, but not enough for him to secure the starting job or the backup job.

Simply put, the Giants have a quarterback room that leaves a lot to be desired. Should Jones get hurt or play like he did in his preseason debut, the front office might have to go against the idea of not searching for help at some point during the season.
