U.S. District Judge David Carter toured the Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles on Wednesday as part of a lawsuit alleging that the VA has failed to provide sufficient permanent housing for homeless military veterans.
The lawsuit, filed by veterans’ advocacy groups, claims the VA has not lived up to a 2015 settlement agreement. This agreement required the VA to convert a portion of the 388-acre campus into permanent supportive housing for homeless veterans. A master plan called for 1,200 units, of which only 233 have been completed, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Plaintiffs argue that the VA’s progress has been inadequate, citing delays in construction and insufficient development of housing units. They also claim that the VA has not fully implemented required support services, including mental health care and job training.
The Department of Veterans Affairs argues it is making significant progress and remains committed to fulfilling the settlement terms.
