Human remains found by mushroom hunter near Winter Park

A man hunting for mushrooms near Winter Park on Saturday came across a human skull in the forest, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

The man contacted law enforcement help on Saturday after finding the skull in a heavily forested area between U.S. 40 and Mary Jane Road, CBI officials said in a news release Monday.

Federal, state and local law enforcement responded to the area and found the skull as well as “several other bones” in the area. Search and rescue crews also searched a wider area but did not find additional remains.

Investigators believe the remains were in the forest for a “significant period, and possibly many years,” CBI officials said Monday.
