Shooter opens fire on entrance of Lackland Air Force Base

U.S. Air Force security guards at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland traded gunfire Saturday morning with at least one suspect who twice opened fire on the entrance from a moving vehicle, a spokesperson for the base said.

The first shooting unfolded around 2:15 a.m. at the main gate of Lackland Air Force Base. No one was injured in the gunfire exchange, which is currently being investigated by the San Antonio Police Department.

“The security personnel stated they heard several shots fired as well as the fired rounds go past them,” Sgt. Washington Moscoso said in a press release. “After this incident, the security personnel added more armed guards as a precaution.”

Just hours later, around 4:30 a.m., a Sedan stopped near the same entrance and someone again fired shots at air force personnel, who returned the gunfire. The vehicle fled the scene and no arrests have yet been made.

It’s not clear how many rounds were fired off nor how many suspects were involved in the pair of drive-by shootings, police said. A motive was also unclear.

Base spokesperson Stefanie Antosh said the gate was closed off in wake of the shootings, but was reopened again around 9:30 a.m.

“There is no threat to the installation,” Antosh confirmed. “We had no injuries, no fatalities.”

In addition to Lackland, Joint Base San Antonio includes Randolph Air Force Base and the Army’s Fort Sam Houston and the Camp Bulllis training camp. More than 24,000 active duty members and 10,000 Department of Defense civilians live on-site, according to the base’s website.
