ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – A Rockford man who claims he has the “greatest mullet of all time” has advanced to the final round in the contest that’s given him the chance to prove it.

Morgan Earp blew through the first two rounds of the USA Mullet Championships earlier this summer and is now in the finals. If he wins, he’ll take home $5,000 in cash and a new GoPro camera.

Voting ends Aug. 21. The winner will be announced Aug. 28. Earp is currently in fifth place nationally.

“I’ve got a great mullet team working around the clock tirelessly to get me all the way to the final round and get the gold home,” Earp said before voting opened Wednesday morning.

Earp’s team includes his wife, his barber and a slew of supporters who’ve helped him promote his campaign across the country.

“The secret to winning this competition is the power of the people and their ability to recognize a great hairstyle when they see one,” he said.

As for how he takes care of his iconic hairstyle, Earp keeps it simple so it always appears natural and ready to turn heads.

“All you need in the morning is a quick comb and a little hair gel on the sides to keep it spick and span, and you’re ready to go,” he said.

Earp says the greatest thing about a mullet is that anyone can grow one. A championship flow, however, is another story.

“When you’re talking about a mullet, you’re talking about a hairstyle with character, with attitude,” Earp said. “It exudes confidence and says, ‘I have the power.'”

Carley Earp, Morgan’s wife, agrees.

“It’s absolutely been a journey watching him go through all of this,” she said. “He’s incredible. It’s been an honor being the wife of the greatest mullet of all time.”

The USA Mullet Championships is also a fundraiser for Jared Allen’s Home for Wounded Warriors, a nonprofit that provides mortgage-free homes for combat veterans.
