'Oasis' offers relief for people experiencing homelessness

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The summer temperatures are only heating up, making life increasingly harder for many people experiencing homelessness.

That’s why Urban Alchemy has set up a place to offer resources and a little shade in this summer heat.

Chaz Roberts, who works for Urban Alchemy, spent his day forming relationships with people at the “Oasis.”

“He’s (Roberts) like an angel in disguise,” said a person who stopped by.

Roberts said making sure everyone is taken care of is important, no matter their background.

“Same person in a high rise to a person who is homeless, both of them experience depression, anxiety or the want to be better,” said Roberts.

Harriet Young, who also works for Urban Alchemy, said this space offers much more than just a place to hide from the sun.

“They don’t have to drag their luggage around,” said Young. “This space is open 24 hours a day. They can come here and relax and get their thoughts together.”

Urban Alchemy has partnered with local organizations like the Sow Family Foundation to offer free food and water also.

The city also operates cooling centers in its facilities, like libraries and parks and recreation buildings, during normal operating hours.
