US

Authorities rescued a 75-year-old hiker Saturday afternoon after he fell more than 100 feet off a rocky cliff off of San Antonio Valley Road in unincorporated Santa Clara County.

The incident happened sometime after 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies located the injured hiker at the bottom of the cliff but were unable to reach him due to the terrain and called in the San Jose Police Department’s helicopter (AIR3) to help with the rescue.

“Despite heavy tree cover, AIR3 successfully lowered an officer via long line to the hiker’s location,” the SJPD said in a press release. “The officer and the hiker were then extricated from the creek bed and transported a few feet to a waiting medical helicopter, stationed about half a mile away.”

It’s unclear if the hiker had company or was hiking alone.

He was flown to a trauma center for emergency treatment. His current condition is unknown.
