NYPD exploring if human remains found in Bronx are from same body found ablaze in Yonkers

US

Police officials revealed more details on Thursday about a gruesome discovery of body parts in a Bronx apartment, and confirmed that investigators think they may be related to human remains found under a bridge in Yonkers earlier this week.

The NYPD said investigators found two hands in a pot on the kitchen floor and parts of a leg in the freezer of an apartment on Rogers Place and East 163rd Street in the Longwood neighborhood of the Bronx while serving a search warrant on Monday night.

They also found a gun and drug paraphernalia inside a bedroom, according to the department.

Officials said they were exploring whether the remains were connected to body parts set on fire in a shopping cart early on Monday morning under the Oak Bridge in Yonkers, about 13 miles away. But they could still not definitively say whether the remains belonged to a male or female, and whether the body parts found in both locations belonged to the same person.

Yonkers police said in a statement on Facebook earlier this week that the scene under the bridge appeared to be “merely a ‘dump site’” after a homicide. Police in Yonkers referred further questions to the NYPD.

NYPD officials said on Thursday that they used surveillance video to link the two locations, though they would not specify what they were looking for when they entered the Bronx apartment on Monday.

Neighbor Roberto Marenco told Gothamist by phone that he hadn’t heard anything strange going on in the Rogers Place building until police arrived to investigate an apartment on the fourth floor.

“No one knows anything,” he said in Spanish. “Honestly, everyone is really surprised about this. “I’ve lived here for 20 years — nothing like this ever happens.”

Police did not make any immediate arrests have not announced any suspects.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
