LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A Las Vegas man faces several charges after police said he fired shots that impacted a downtown casino during a fight between a large group of people, according to an arrest report obtained by 8 News Now.
The shooting took place on Saturday, Aug. 3 shortly before 5 a.m. near Fremont Street and Casino Center Boulevard.
Daniel Porter, 42, faces several charges including two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, owning or possessing a firearm by a prohibited person, and possession of a controlled substance.
Las Vegas Metropolitan police said they responded to the downtown area near Fremont Street after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived they were directed to a man nearby who identified himself as Daniel Porter. While conducting a pat down they found a 9mm gun in his possession, according to police.
After looking through surveillance video in the area police identified Porter in the video and saw what appeared to be a large group of approximately 30 people fighting, the video also showed people begin to run north on Casino Center Boulevard, Porter was seen in the video pulling out a gun and firing four rounds in the direction of the people running, according to a police arrest report.
During the investigation, police said they located several people who witnessed the shooting and surveillance video near Four Queens and Binions that showed another angle of the incident.
Officers also located four spent 9mm cartridge casings. One of the the casings was found near the Fremont Hotel the other three were found near Casino Center Boulevard and Fremont Street. Officers also said they found a bullet that had been compressed and deformed in the road. Police also saw a broken ceiling tile to the canopy of Binions Casino and shards of glass, according to the arrest report.
While in the police interview room, police said Porter dropped a bag of white powdery substance which was later tested and confirmed by police to be cocaine. Police also located a powdery substance on Porter which tested positive for meth. Porter later told police during an interview that he snorts cocaine and meth and did so the day of the shooting, according to the report.
When detectives asked Porter if he wanted to apologize to Binions Casino he said that he did and wrote an apology letter to the casino for striking the building with gunfire.
Porter also told police he bought the gun for $100 one week prior to the shooting and liked to hang out downtown but did not like the people on Fremont Street from California and believed some of those individuals were involved in the fight before the shooting, according to the report.
In the report police also stated that Porter had several previous convictions including burglary, discharging a fire into an occupied structure, discharging a firearm out of a vehicle, assault, and attempted murder.
Porter was taken to the Clark County Detention Center and is expected in court on Aug. 21, according to online court records.
