US

A Simi Valley man and his Chihuahua are recovering after a coyote entered their home through the dog door and attacked until the man killed the wild creature with a kitchen knife.

Just before midnight Monday night, a homeowner in the 500 block of Shadow Lane exited the shower only to hear a commotion downstairs, Sgt. Morton of the Simi Valley Police Department told KTLA.

Once downstairs, the man realized a coyote was in his kitchen attacking the Chihuahua.

Arming himself with a kitchen knife, the man stabbed the coyote several times, then followed it as it retreated to a bathroom, where he killed the predator.

The dog was wounded in the face and head, and he is expected to be released from the veterinarian today.

The homeowner was wounded in his right hand and arm, but Morton says he is currently doing well.

Kimberly Cheng and Sofia Pop Perez contributed to this report.
