A conceal and carry license holder fired his weapon after suffering a broken finger while getting attacked by a large group Tuesday morning in the Chatham neighborhood, Chicago police said.

About 8:30 a.m., a security guard was working in the 100 block of West 87th Street when he became involved in a verbal argument that turned physical with a large group of people, police said.

The security guard was struck and suffered a broken finger. The guard, who is a CCL holder, discharged his weapon striking a 28-year-old man to the wrist and ankle. The wounded man was taken in serious condition to UChicago Medicine where his condition was stabilized, police said.

No other injuries were reported during the shooting, and detectives were investigating.
