Liberty Hill library looks to future with more space

LIBERTY HILL, Texas (KXAN) — Too many people and not enough space. That’s what happening with Liberty Hill’s public library.

“There are so many things we can’t do because of space limitations,” Library Director Angela Palmer said.

There are major growing pains at the library.

“Our operating budget comes from sales tax, so the more our people support local businesses, the better our library is,” Palmer added.

The current spot is bursting at its bindings.

“Almost 16,000 people come to programs, over 30,000 people come to visit the library, we’ve had almost 2,000 kids sign up for summer reading,” Palmer explained. “That’s exactly why the library is ready to leave its current space for a new one. That new site is right here next to Liberty Hill Elementary School, right off Main Street, with plenty of room to grow.”

KXAN caught up with a young reader who told us she loved the reading programs. It’s those programs the library considers at the heart of what it does.

“We really need quiet spaces for people to study, to have book clubs, to do things like that,” library board member Lisa Messana said.

The library wants to bridge a gap in a rapidly growing city.

“We call ourselves ‘the heart of the hill.’ And we really want to be a hub for our community and that’s what we see our new space doing,” Palmer added.

“Our hopes are that we fulfill everyone’s needs,” Messana said. “But if we can even get a fraction closer it’d be great.”

A new chapter that’s still being written.

As of now, there is not a current timeline on when a groundbreaking could take place.
