Harris running mate announcement expected

US

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Vice President Kamala Harris is on the verge of announcing who she wants to join her on the Democratic ticket for the White House.

Harris held in-person interviews with some of the leading contenders over the weekend.

Harris is headed into one of the biggest days of her campaign as the official Democratic presidential nominee.

“It’s the most important single decision she’ll make in the early part of the campaign,” said Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

Harris spent her weekend interviewing potential running mates including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly.

Democratic lawmakers are weighing in on the process.

“It’s going to be a personal choice,” said Durbin.

Political science expert Hans Noel says the main goal is to pick someone who won’t shake things up too much.

“Being a vice president is also a platform from which people run for president in the future,” said Noel.

Noel says Harris is looking for a candidate who could help win in swing states.

“Of those swing states, Pennsylvania is the largest, it’s got the most at stake,” Noel added.

Tuesday night Harris and her VP pick will hold a joint rally in Philadelphia.
