Colin Jost Replaced On Olympic Surfing Coverage After Suffering Staph And Ear Infection In Tahiti: “Rumors Of My Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated”

US

Colin Jost‘s bad luck streak may have come to an end.

The Saturday Night Live star has been replaced in Tahiti where he’s been serving as the Olympics Surfing Correspondent for NBC. Deadline reports that Jost has been replaced by Australia weatherman Luke Bradnam from Channel Nine.

According to the outlet, Jost was only meant to cover Olympic surfing temporarily. But the Weekend Update anchor handled it with good humor in a new social media post in which he adopted his best news anchor voice to report on the “wall of skulls” at Teahupo’o.

“Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Semis and finals of Olympic surfing happening right now in Tahiti,” he wrote in the caption.

The news of Jost’s exit from Tahiti comes after he cut his foot on a coral reef and got an ear and staph infection — all in just one week!

The comedian announced that he injured his foot soon after arriving in Tahiti. While sharing a photo of his bloody foot on social media, Jost wrote, “This might ruin my WikiFeet score but I just arrived in Tahiti for the surfing Olympics and the reef was excited to greet me #paris2024 #showfeet.”

“It’s a weird feeling when you’re in the medical tent way more than any of the athletes,” he joked to NBC’s Maria Taylor last week.

Jost later checked in with Mike Tirico in Paris while lounging poolside in Tahiti. He notably kept his bandaged foot elevated during his interview with Tirico as he listed his ailments.

“It’s going great, Mike. I woke up this morning and discovered that I had added ear infection to my growing list of ailments. So I’m now on three different medications — four, if you count piña coladas,” he joked. “My new goal is to have as many infections as there are Olympic Events.”

He also hinted that he could be going to Paris after his stint in Tahiti is over.

“I’m hoping that then I can be high enough on medicine that when I get to Paris I can compete in Olympic breakdancing,” he joked.

Jost has become NBC’s first Olympic surfing correspondent thanks to his personal passion for surfing. But the comedian’s self-deprecating humor — and his unfortunate bad luck — have made this summer’s Olympic surfing even more memorable.

As he told Taylor during their hilarious interview about his “tragic” time in Tahiti, Jost is taking a “gonzo” approach to his surfing coverage.

But even he had to admit that NBC may have set him up “for failure” considering there were even ants were “eating” his feet during their live interview.
