Enrollment opens for Round Rock Citizens Police Academy

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Locals can get a first-hand look at how the Round Rock Police Department operates with its annual Citizens Police Academy.

RRPD Chief Allen Banks said the program has been offered in the city since the mid-90s with interest growing every year.

According to the City of Round Rock’s website, the program lasts 12 weeks with one class every Tuesday night.

Banks said program participants will shadow sworn police officers and civilian staff. Some examples of the departments they’ll work with include following white-collar crime detectives and K-9 officers.

Banks said the Citizens Police Academy allows the community to get a better understanding of how the department works and what goes into a shift. He said officers also get the chance to better connect with residents as well.

Overall, Banks said strengthening bonds is what the program is all about.

“It’s about trust, it’s about relationships. And if we can foster great relationships with our community, then we’re doing what we need to do,” Banks said.

Enrollment for RRPD’s Citizens Police Academy is open until all spots are filled. The first class takes place September 3.
