MINNEAPOLIS — The Chicago White Sox have claimed a pitcher off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and optioned him to their Triple-A affiliate, the Charlotte Knights.
The White Sox claimed Gus Varland, a 27-year-old right-hander, who was 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA and three strikeouts in seven relief appearances with the Dodgers this season.
Varland has spent the majority of 2024 with Los Angeles’ Triple-A affiliate, the Oklahoma City Baseball Club, making 28 appearances (one start). In 32.2 innings pitched at the Triple-A level in 2024, Varland has posted a 2-2 record with a 7.99 ERA.
Varland has gone 1-1 with a 5.81 ERA (17 ER/26.1 IP) and 23 strikeouts in 23 career games over parts of two major-league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers (2023) and the Dodgers (2023-24).
He was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 14th round of the 2018 MLB amateur draft.
