August-2024 begins—the “Sunday of Summer”

Final month of Climatological Summer—we lose 74 minutes of daylight this month.   

“Normal” High temperatures continue to decline, from 84 degrees on the 1stto 80 on the 31st, and continue declining rapidly as we slide into Fall.

August opens on a warm note—both locally and across the country     

Thursday highs across the U.S. 

How much above normal? 

Local area highs flirt with 90 degrees despite the lack of sunshine. 

Warm start to August to continue through the coming weekend. 

Record to near record warmth dominated both coasts while the Nation’s Heartland enjoyed a relatively comfortably July, compared to normal.

Heatwave in the Northwest and Southeast; Flooding Threats in the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Southwest

Dangerous heat engulfs much of the country as one heatwave continues in the Southeast and another heatwave intensifies in the Northwest. Scattered strong storms will bring the risk flash flooding from the Ohio/Tennessee Valley into the Mid-Atlantic and in the Southwest. A tropical depression is likely to form over the Straits of Florida or eastern Gulf of Mexico near Florida this weekend.
