Just over 24 hours after her boss dropped out of the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris already has enough delegates to win the nomination at next month’s Democratic National Convention.
.President Biden announced Sunday that he’d suspend his campaign, and endorsed Harris as his successor on the ballot, releasing all his delegates to vote for whomever they choose.
A number of names had been floated as potential candidates, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, but they have both endorsed Harris and said they’ll stay out of the race.
A survey by the Associated Press showed that several state delegations, including Texas and California, met late Monday to confirm their support for the Vice President. That gave Harris the support of at least 2,579 delegates. She only needs 1,976 to get the nod.
Delegates did not name another potential candidate.
The delegates joined prominent elected officials, party leaders and political organizations that immediately rallied around her as a Presidential candidate, and donations streamed into her campaign coffers in a 24-hour record or presidential.
