Malden Public School students should be vigilant about scams in their school email inboxes, police said.

A statement from the Malden Police Department released Friday said the scam targets students in the Malden school system. The emails look like they are coming from staff members, but are actually from scammers attempting to entice students into a fake “job opportunity,” the statement says.

The scammer’s method involves convincing the student to send biological and banking information over emails under the guise of depositing a check, reports say.

“They threaten the victim(s) through text messaging if they don’t comply with their demands,” the statement says of the scammers. ”They send victims images of ‘firearms,’ as well as explicit threats of physical violence.”

Police say these threats are uncredible, and should be taken as a scare tactic. They caution all residents to never give out personal information online, especially if you are unable to verify the person’s identity.

Malden Public Schools did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Boston.com.
