Another big rig crashes into Cal Poly railroad bridge

A big rig crashed into the Cal Poly railroad bridge Monday morning.

A photo shared by Mary Beaudoin, mother of a Cal Poly student who sent it to her, showed the truck pulled over with its trailer damaged.

The Cal Poly Police Department reported the collision on Highland Drive at about 9 a.m. Monday.

Cal Poly university spokesperson Matt Lazier told The Tribune in an email that Cal Poly police reported that a big rig pulling a trailer collided with the bottom of the railroad trestle while traveling westbound on Highland Drive. This caused the trailer to become wedged underneath.

“There were no injuries, and no drugs or alcohol involved; the driver was simply unaware of the truck/trailer clearance requirements for his vehicle,” Lazier said in the email.

Lazier also said Union Pacific Railroad was advised to inform any approaching trains. The trailer was removed from beneath the trestle and the roadway was cleared about 11:05 a.m., according to Lazier.

There did not appear to be any structural damage to the trestle, but Union Pacific will continue to inspect the structure, Lazier said.

The Highland train trestle has a notably low clearance at 12 feet and 6 inches, and it’s been the site of repeated collisions over the years.

The Tribune previously reported that there were 26 crashes into the bridge from 2014 until June 2019. The majority of collisions occurred in 2019.
