Texas DNC delegates to meet about supporting Kamala Harris

US

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A virtual meeting will happen Monday evening for the Texans selected to go to the Democratic National Convention (DNC), and one of the big topics of discussion will focus on whether they’d like to coalesce ahead of time and pledge their support for Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee.

A couple of Austin area delegates told KXAN they’re expecting to jump onto a call at 7:30 p.m. Whether any announcement would follow that meeting is unclear. However, the delegates KXAN spoke to shared they would like the state’s 273 delegates to publicly back Harris before they head to Chicago for the convention.

President Joe Biden dropped a political bombshell when he announced Sunday afternoon he would end his reelection campaign and a short while later endorsed Harris to take his spot on the top of the ticket.

A flurry of Democratic leaders quickly followed suit, including many in Texas voicing their support for Harris to become their party’s presidential nominee.

Several other state parties already announced their DNC delegates met Sunday and decided to pledge support for Harris as a bloc. Depending on what happens Monday night, perhaps the Texas Democrats could be the next group to do the same thing.

The Texas delegates could hold significant sway when voting on the nominee begins at the convention on Aug. 19 in Chicago.

Texas has the third largest amount of delegates following California and New York. Where their support goes could help tip the scales if multiple candidates declare they’re challenging Harris for the nomination. However, no significant challenger to her has emerged as of Monday afternoon.
