TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A woman is in critical condition after she was repeatedly stabbed at Miami International Airport on Saturday night, causing chaos in the terminal.

The stabbing occurred around 11:33 p.m. on the fourth floor of Terminal J in International Arrivals.

According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, a man repeatedly stabbed the woman and tried to throw her over the railing. The woman was able to escape and ran to the third floor where officers found her.

Initially, police said they were alerted to a possible active shooter, temporarily halting airport operations.

“There is no impact at all to airport operations, and it is considered an isolated incident,” Miami-Dade Police spokesperson Angel Rodriguez later said.

The suspect was arrested in the terminal where the stabbing happened, and police were able to find the knife they believe was used in the attack.

A passenger told local news outlet WTVJ she and her family heard what they believed was an argument before the chaos erupted.

“We heard the escalation of the fight and somebody said run,” Dana, a Delta Airlines passenger said. “When they said run, we all ran.”

Authorities are trying to determine the relationship between the suspect and the woman. It’s unknown what prompted the attack or whether those involved were travelers.

The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she is in critical condition. Additional details were not immediately available.

Operations at the airport have since returned to normal.
