‘Lights Up!’ festival

“Lights Up!,” City Lights Theater Company’s annual festival of new plays, will be an in-person event this year after going virtual on the Filament podcast channel since 2020..

The festival is set for Aug. 4 and features new stage adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Greek Interpreter,” written by City Lights sound designer and composer George Psarras; and of Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” written by frequent City Lights actor Max Tachis.

Staged play readings begin at 2 p.m. at City Lights, 529 S. Second St. in downtown San Jose. A Maker Fair begins at 1 p.m. and will be open between the two play readings as well. Festival admission is “pay what you can,” with a suggested donation of $20. For more information, visit cltc.org/lights-up.

Discover artist residencies

Applications for the artist-in-residence program at the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose are open through Aug. 16.

Resident artists are called upon to help youngsters draw, paint, sculpt and create in a 17- to 18-week program in the museum’s LeRoy Neiman Art Studio. The fall/winter residency begins Oct. 5, followed by a winter/spring and a summer session. Each artist will receive $1,500-$1,875 a month.

Artists will be tasked with creating and facilitating monthly hands-on art programs for children of all ages on the weekends. Resident artists will have the opportunity to display their own artwork in the museum’s gallery. Each artist will receive promotion on the museum’s marketing channels and a portfolio of their museum work in photos and video to take with them after their residency is complete.
