CHICAGO — A 7-year-old boy was shot while riding in an SUV that was towing a U-Haul trailer on the Dan Ryan Expressway early Sunday morning.

The northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan at 73rd Street were shut down for about an hour while the shooting was under investigation, but they were reopened just before 5 a.m., Illinois State Police say.

According to ISP, troopers responded to a shooting just before 2:45 a.m. Sunday on the northbound Dan Ryan at 73rd Street. ISP says a preliminary report indicated the victim’s vehicle was going north on the expressway when an unknown vehicle began shooting, striking a 7-year-old male passenger.

The driver of the victim’s vehicle then stopped at East 22nd Street and South Michigan Avenue on the Near South Side and called for assistance, according to ISP, and the 7-year-old was taken to a local hospital with injuries. Officers could also be seen escorting two adults and two other children to a police vehicle.

Police have not given an update on the condition of the 7-year-old victim or said if they have anybody in custody for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
