Wittenberg Village expansion uses universal design & innovative technologies to appeal to Chicagoland elders

US

Wittenberg Village, a non-profit Lutheran Life Community in Crown Point, Indiana, announces the expansion of its 62+ senior living community with up to 24 new cottage homes.

However, this isn’t your grandma’s cottage. Wittenberg Village is betting that younger retirees in their 60s and early 70s will gravitate towards innovative smart home technology and universal design capable of growing and adapting to their needs for the decades to come.

One and Done

One familiar scenario for retirees is to sell the old family home and downsize to a smaller condominium or 55+ community. Then, a decade or so later, they move again to a senior living community where they can access health-related services.

“At Wittenberg Village, we’re offering a different option to today’s modern elder: Move once. And enjoy your life,” said Steven Owen, Executive Director at Lutheran Life Communities. “Active retirees like easy access to lifestyle amenities, the lock-and-go freedom that a Life Plan community offers and the privacy of your home. People can be as social as they wish.”

According to trends, today’s modern elders don’t want to compromise on space or style. They also want intuitive technologies that can keep them safe and secure while living independently for as long as possible. They know that there will likely come a day when they will need supportive services to allow them to age in place. Finally, more than 55% of older adults own pets, so these independent living cottages are also pet friendly on a safe, walkable, tree-lined campus.

Universal Design: A Game-Changer for Boomers

A key feature of each cottage is the latest in adaptive, universal design. What is universal design? AgingInPlace.com defines it as “creating an attractive, stylish space that everyone, regardless of age, size or ability, can live in or visit.” A home with a universal design makes it easier for residents to live comfortably and for guests to visit now and in the future, even as everybody’s needs and abilities change over time.

“That’s where these new cottages are a real game changer when it comes to empowering people,” said Kelli Schultz, Sales Director at Lutheran Life Communities. “They are designed for both modern living and long-term peace of mind. Whether someone is still working or retired, these cottages offer people an empowering downsizing option.”

Spacious Floor Plans

This new cottage expansion at Wittenberg Village will offer two floor plans. Both floor plans include two bedrooms, two full bathroom options, an attached two-car garage and a semi-private patio and lawn. They range from 1,392 sq. ft. to 1508 sq. ft. The larger floor plan also includes a den.
