Reason ‘Flabbergasted’ Dog Brings Sock to Owner Delights Internet

US

Often, dog owners intentionally keep their socks out of their pets’ reach. However, in this case, golden retriever Aubrey is encouraged to pick them up for the most heartwarming reason.

In a viral TikTok video shared to an account dedicated to the dog, @pawbrey, Aubrey can be seen lying on top of a man and dropping a sock on him. The on-screen text explains she does this so “he can do magic for her.” Aubrey then sits up to enjoy the show, which is performed from the comfort of the owner’s bed.

The man, who is the owner’s boyfriend, picks up the gray sock, clenches his fists and then swirls his hands in front of the dog’s face. Aubrey’s eyes are fixated on his hands, and her mouth opens in apparent surprise when he shows that the sock is missing.

Racking up 726,000 views and 96,000 likes, it seems Aubrey isn’t the only one in awe.

One user said, “This guy is the real deal, he got me too,” and another wrote, “[She’s] flabbergasted!!!”

A third commenter said: “If you ever needed a picture description of disbelief meets amazement; this is it.”

A fourth wrote, “You can’t tell if she gets the trick or not.”

At the start of the video, the man can be seen discreetly placing the sock behind his head. At the end of the clip, it looks like he has been rumbled as Aubrey gets up and sniffs around his head.

“She can smell it but believes it has disappeared!” a TikTok user said.

This is most likely true as dogs have an incredible sense of smell. The VCA Animal Hospitals website states that canines have over 100 million sensory receptor sites in their nasal cavity, while humans have only 6 million. Additionally, the part of the canine brain responsible for analyzing odors is about 40 times larger than the corresponding part in the human brain. This results in dogs being able to smell 1,000 to 10,000 times better than humans.

Newsweek previously spoke to Renee Rhoades, a canine behaviorist at R+Dogs, about the importance of sniffing for dogs.

She said: “Providing opportunities for your dog to sniff is the most important aspect of going out on a walk with them. It’s commonly thought that taking the dog for a walk should engage enough physical stimulation for them to feel satisfied. However, dogs see the world through their nose, and their bodies are biologically fulfilled through the act of sniffing.”

Newsweek reached out to @pawbrey for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.
