MBTA announces upcoming shutdowns for month of August

Various shutdowns and closures on MBTA lines are planned for August.

More shutdowns are coming to the T, the MBTA announced on Wednesday. Changes are planned on the Green, Red and Orange Lines, the Mattapan trolley, and the Haverhill Commuter Rail line throughout August. 

The reasons for each shutdown vary, but they are overall to improve infrastructure and reliability “across the system,” the MBTA said in a statement. Riders can stay up to date with these shutdowns and service changes with the MBTA here, and to follow them on X (formerly Twitter) @MBTA.  

MBTA shutdowns in August 2024

Green Line

  • Where: B branch service suspended between Boston College and Babcock Street 
  • When: Every day from August 2 – 11 
  • Why: Replace tracks and improve station amenities like lights, cleanliness, and painting
  • Alternatives: Free shuttle buses 

Orange Line

  • Where: Service suspended between Wellington and Back Bay 
  • When: Weekends of August 3 – 4 and August 17 – 18
  • Why: Signal work
  • Alternatives: Free shuttle buses, Green Line, Haverhill Commuter Rail line

Red Line

  • Where: Service suspended between JFK/UMass and Kendall/MIT
  • When: Every day from August 19 – 25
  • Why: Replace tracks and improve station amenities
  • Alternatives: Free shuttle buses, Commuter Rail service between Braintree and South Station and between Porter and North Station. 

Mattapan Line

  • Where: Service suspended between Mattapan and Ashmont
  • When: approximately 8:45 PM on August 16, and through the weekend of August 17 – 18
  • Why: Track work
  • Alternatives: Free shuttle buses

Haverhill Commuter Rail Line

  • Where: Haverhill Station temporarily closed to passengers
  • When: Through summer of 2025
  • Why: Replacement of the South Elm Bridge
  • Alternatives: Free connection with Bus Route 137, connecting with Lowell and Haverhill Line train service at Anderson/Woburn station
