Former Inglewood teacher convicted of murder, sexual assault

A Los Angeles County jury has convicted a former middle school teacher of murder and sexual assault incidents that took place nearly 20 years ago.

Charles Wright, 59 of Inglewood, was convicted on Wednesday, according to the office of L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón.

“I am pleased that this day has finally come for the victims of this horrendous crime. I’d like to thank the jury for listening to the evidence and ensuring that Mr. Wright is brought to justice for the brutal murder of Ms. Epps, and the sexual violence he committed against the second victim,” Gascón said. “It is particularly egregious that these crimes were committed by someone who was in a position of trust and authority. This conviction sends a clear message that we will not tolerate violence in our community.”

Wright killed 21-year-old Pertina Epps by strangulation on April 26, 2005, according to the DA’s Office. He was linked to that case 16 years later, in 2022, through DNA evidence.

Wright was arrested in January 2022 but was later released on $1 million bail before he was formally charged with murder.

While out on bail, he was linked to another crime — the September 2006 sexual assault and kidnapping of an 18-year-old woman.

Wright will be sentenced on Sept. 10 in Inglewood. He’s expected to receive 50 years to life in prison.
