A Bridgeview man being held in Cook County Jail died Friday following a “medical emergency,” the Cook County Sheriff’s office confirmed.

Ahmad Abed, 32, was being held in the jail’s residential treatment unit, which houses people with more serious medical or mental health needs, according to sheriff’s office representatives. He suffered “an apparent medical emergency” Friday afternoon and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, officials said. Abed was pronounced dead at 2:25 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

Abed was awaiting a trial for allegedly violating an order of protection, court records show.

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is investigating Abed’s death, according to the sheriff’s office.
