NYPD: One man, 74, killed and another injured in daylight shooting at Tompkins Square Park

US

One man was killed and another injured in a broad daylight shooting at Tompkins Square Park Friday morning, police said.

According to the NYPD, a suspect opened fire in the park at around 9:50 a.m., striking a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old man, both in their backs.

Officials initially said both men were taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, but later announced the older man died of his injuries.

His name was not immediately released, as police worked to notify his family.

Police described the shooter as a man wearing a black jacket, faded blue jeans, a black bucket hat, black sneakers, white gloves and a white mask. He left the park near East 7th Street and Avenue B, heading north.

The popular Manhattan park has been the scene of multiple shooting incidents so far this year, according to the NYPD.

On a Saturday afternoon in March, a 26-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were shot and injured in the park.

Waldemar Alverio, 38, was ultimately arrested and charged for that shooting, along with another one at the park five days later— where Alverio fired his gun at a group of people but didn’t hit anyone, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.

No shooting incidents occurred in the park from January to July of 2023, according to the NYPD’s Compstat data.

The motive behind Friday’s shooting was not immediately clear, according to police.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
