Longhorns, Red Raiders to play in 2025 Las Vegas baseball tournament

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders will play on the diamond next season after all.

Organizers for the Las Vegas College Baseball Classic announced the 2025 field Thursday and it includes the Longhorns, Red Raiders, Washington Huskies and Illinois Fighting Illini The tournament is scheduled for Feb. 28-March 2 at Las Vegas Ballpark, home of the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators.

The tournament format is a round-robin with two games per day at the venue. The matchups aren’t set yet, but teams will play at 2 and 6 p.m. PT on the first day and noon and 4 p.m. PT on the remaining two.

All games will be streamed on D1Baseball.com. The inaugural Las Vegas College Baseball Classic last season featured Oklahoma, Ohio State, Cal and Pitt.

Texas grabs Rugar Riojas from UTSA for bullpen help

The Longhorns and head coach Jim Schlossnagle picked up a bullpen piece from the transfer portal Thursday when Wimberley’s Rugar Riojas made his commitment via social media.

Riojas spent two seasons with UTSA and was one of the country’s top relievers in 2024. Riojas was named to the All-American Athletic Conference second team with 10 wins and seven saves in 26 appearances. He pitched 69 1/3 innings with 75 strikeouts against 18 walks and a 3.25 ERA. Riojas was on the midseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year award.

Riojas was named to the Conference USA all-freshman team in 2023 before the Roadrunners switched to the AAC.
