Hurricane Beryl victim assistance: Where to get help with food, shelter, cooling centers and other services

Widespread wind damage and debris aren’t the only concern for Hurricane Beryl victims in southeast Texas.

We want to get storm victims back on their feet with access to the most important essentials: fresh food, clean water, shelter, and even mental health services.

Disaster Assistance

If you have lost your home in Hurricane Beryl, call the American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance provides unemployment benefits for Texans who were not able to work or are no longer working due to Hurricane Beryl. Eligible applicants must not be working as a “direct result of a major disaster.”

Texas Workforce Commission said it is accepting applications for unemployment assistance in 40 counties through July 16, 2024, including: Anderson, Austin, Bell, Calhoun, Collin, Cooke, Coryell, Ellis, Dallas, Denton, Eastland, Falls, Guadalupe, Hardin, Harris, Henderson, Hockley, Jasper, Jones, Kaufman, Lamar, Leon, Liberty, Montague, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Navarro, Newton, Panola, Polk, Rusk Sabine, San Jacinto, Smith, Terrell, Trinity, Tyler, Van Zandt, Walker and Waller.

While FEMA assistance for Beryl victims has not been announced, you can visit DisasterAssistance.org or call 1-800-621-3362 with questions.

Food Assistance

Houston Food Bank said it is closely monitoring conditions and will provide relief through its 1,600 community partners across SE Texas.

Houston Food Bank has partners in Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston, Montgomery, Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Burleson, Chambers, Grimes, Liberty, Madison, Robertson, San Jacinto, Trinity, Walker, Waller and Washington counties.

Nonprofit Bread of Life is offering free resources, water, batteries, food, hygiene items, and more to hundreds of Houstonians beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday at 2019 Crawford St.

A Wednesday afternoon water and ice distribution will happen at five locations in Houston from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Just two cases of water and two bags of ice will be given per car at the following places:

  • Acres Homes Multi-Service Center: 6719 West Montgomery Road
  • Southwest Multi-Service Center: 6400 High Star Drive
  • Northeast Multi-Service Center: 9720 Spaulding St.
  • Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center: 6402 Market St.
  • Sunnyside Multi-Service Center: 4410 Reed Road

The Kroger at 14221 E. Sam Houston Parkway N. will hold a free water and meals distribution event on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., or while supplies last. The store is collaborating with Judge Lina Hidalgo’s Office, Trill Burgers, and Radio One.

Tyson Foods is deploying its Meals that Matter Disaster Relief Team to serve hot food. This will take place each day on Thursday, July 11 through Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Walmart Parking Lot at 2391 S. Wayside Drive.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will distribute food bags over Thursday, July 11 through Friday, July 12. at the Mamie George Community Center at 111 Collins Road in Richmond from 9 a.m. to noon.

The center will also be a cooling center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A host of state and local lawmakers are teaming up for an Aldine food distribution on Thursday, July 11, at noon until supplies last at the Deputy Darren Almendarez Community Center at 10918 Bentley St. in Houston. Water, snacks, ice, and nonperishable foods will be provided.

Matagorda Co. and Surrounding Areas

Food Bank of the Golden Crescent is working on its aid plan for neighbors impacted by Beryl.

It serves 11 counties, including Calhoun, Colorado, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca, Matagorda, Refugio, Wharton and Victoria.
