How to stop your dog from freaking out during the July 4 fireworks

US

Fireworks season in New York City can be a nerve-wracking time for dog owners. The show-stopping July 4 fireworks display — which will take place over the Hudson instead of the East River this year — is often preceded and followed by weeks of extralegal street fireworks that cause dogs extra agita.

Here are some strategies to keep your canine companion calm and secure during this noisy period.

Create a safe space

First, set up a cozy, secure spot for your dog to retreat to. This could be a crate with their favorite bedding or a designated quiet room in your home, said Maddie Messina, an animal behaviorist in Manhattan who specializes in dogs with anxiety and over-arousal issues.

The aim is to create a sanctuary where they feel insulated from the outside commotion, Messina said. Adding a white noise machine or playing soothing music can help mask the sound of fireworks.

And if all else fails, try a snack.

“Using something like a high-value chew or a frozen Kong to keep their attention on eating for a long time gives them something to focus on and minimize stress,” Messina said.

Tire them out first

Ensure your dog gets plenty of exercise before the fireworks begin and they will be more relaxed. Take them for a long walk or engage in an energetic play session. Mental stimulation through puzzle toys or training games can also help tire them out and divert their attention from the noise.

Maintain a calm demeanor

Dogs are highly attuned to their owner’s emotions. Try to stay calm and continue your usual activities to signal to your dog that everything is normal. Your composed behavior can help reassure them that there is no real danger.

Coddling or trying to soothe your dog can be extremely counterproductive, according to Dominik Feichtner, a Brooklyn-based dog behavior coach since 2015.

“Do not sit with them, do not hold them, leave them alone,” Feichtner said. “It’s an understandable reaction when you see a loved one in distress, but it creates an unhealthy relationship dynamic that’s only going to make your dog more anxious.”

Trainers seem to be split on this advice, with Victoria Shade at petMD writing that comfort can be helpful. Until dogs can speak, it may be best to judge your dog’s reactions individually.

Use anxiety-relief tools

Consider using products designed to alleviate anxiety in dogs. Thundershirts, which provide gentle, calming pressure, can be effective. For severe anxiety, natural calming supplements or veterinarian-prescribed medications might be necessary.

Feichtner recommends CBD treats for dogs, which are dosed very differently from human doses as a way to slightly relieve anxiety. But Messina cautioned that the effects of cannabis are not as studied as other medications, and advised checking with a veterinarian, especially before using medications like trazodone or gabapentin.

Time walks wisely

Avoid taking your dog out during peak firework times. Walk them earlier in the evening, before the main displays start. This reduces the risk of them being startled and potentially bolting out of fear.

Seek professional help if needed

For dogs with severe firework anxiety, consulting a professional dog trainer or a veterinary behaviorist might be beneficial. They can provide specialized advice and behavior modification techniques to better manage your dog’s fear.

By implementing these strategies, you can help your dog stay calm and comfortable during fireworks season in New York City. Preparing in advance and maintaining a reassuring environment are key to keeping your furry friend safe and relaxed.
