CHICAGO — An investigation into a deadly shooting early Wednesday morning, possibly stemming from road rage, shut down the southbound feeder ramp from Stony Island Avenue onto the Bishop Ford Freeway in the South Deering neighborhood on the city’s South Side.
WGN News has confirmed, per Illinois State Police, that one person died and another was transported to a hospital in critical condition following a shooting overnight near the corner of East 95th Street and Stony Island Ave.
ISP says ShotSpotter technology alerted police to the shooting around 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Police are focusing their attention on two vehicles at the scene, plus a tow truck near E. 95th St. There are no other details on the victims as of yet.
A witness, however, told WGN News there was a brick or an object blocking Stony Island Ave., and a driver may have received damage to their vehicle because of it. The witness believes the person thought the tow-truck driver dropped the brick on Stony Island Ave., which led to the shooting.
“He thought that the tow-truck people put the brick there, so he got out of his car and started shooting at them,” the witness said. “They started returning back their fire at him and ended up killing him.”
Police have not confirmed the details of the shooting or whether it was caused by a road-rage incident. Police have also not said if they have a person in custody for the shooting.
