Mets Star Suffers Scary Injury, Goes to Hospital After Hotel Room Fall

Just when everything appeared to be going right for the New York Mets, something went wrong.

On Monday, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that star outfielder Brandon Nimmo slipped and fell in his hotel room on Sunday night. Fortunately, Nimmo suffered nothing major aside from a gash on his forehead, but he was being treated in the hospital on Monday and didn’t get to the ballpark until a couple of hours before their scheduled first pitch in Washington. He didn’t suffer a concussion but is out of the lineup on Monday night.

“He had a little bit of an accident last night at the hotel. In the middle of the night he woke up, needed to go to the bathroom, and slipped and hit his forehead,” Mendoza said. “He’s got a pretty big cut on the forehead. He went through all the tests this morning. We want to make sure that we weren’t missing anything. Luckily, everything came back negative.”

It sounds like Nimmo avoided the worst, which is a huge relief for the Mets and their outfielder. Nimmo has appeared in 77 games this season, slashing .247/.367/.448 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs. He’s on pace to shatter his career-highs in home runs (24) and RBIs (68) and has an OPS above .800 for the fifth straight season.

Nimmo is in the midst of his ninth MLB season, all with the Mets. The 31-year-old was drafted in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft by New York and has remained with the organization his entire career.

Nimmo has been a consistent force for the Mets in the outfield. He’s in the second year of an eight-year, $162 million deal he signed ahead of the 2023 season, and continuing to make a huge impact in New York’s lineup. Nimmo moved from center field to left field this year and has been a solid outfielder, ranking in the 61st percentile in Outs Above Average.

His biggest impact has been with his bat, though, and he’s continued to make waves atop New York’s lineup. Nimmo has been by far the best in the two-hole in New York’s lineup, slashing .362/.471/.741 with six home runs, 18 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.213 in 15 games.

There’s no word on how long it will take Nimmo to return, but based on Mendoza’s comments, he could be back as soon as Tuesday’s game against the Nationals. On Monday, though, Jeff McNeil is playing in left field, with Jose Iglesias getting the start at second base against the left-handed MacKenzie Gore.
