Evanston beach closed as crews search water for missing swimmer

EVANSTON, Ill. — Emergency crews are searching the water at a north suburban beach for an unaccounted swimmer on Sunday afternoon.

According to Evanston police, fire department personnel were called to Lighthouse Beach for a water rescue.

Crews say two swimmers were rescued from the water, but a third person remains unaccounted for.

It is unclear when the swimmer went missing, but police notified the public about the search in a post on X around 4:40 p.m

The Chicago Fire Department helicopter and an Evanston Fire Department drone are currently being used in the search.

Crews have closed Lighthouse Beach as the search continues. It is unclear when the beach may reopen. The public is being asked to avoid the area amid the search.

Police say additional search and rescue crews gathered at the Church Street Boat Ramp and the public is asked to avoid that area as well.

It is unclear what led to the incident and authorities have not provided details on the age or gender of the missing swimmer.
